Baccarat Card Rules

Baccarat is one of the easiest casino games to play. In a way it’s almost like playing a slot machine. You walk up, place your bet and watch the magic happen. There isn’t any strategy involved in Baccarat, but there are rules and knowing the rules will help you spot errors made by the players or the dealer that could cost you money.

Basic Baccarat Rules

There are three bets you can place in any round of Baccarat. You can bet on the Player, you can bet on the Banker, or you can bet on a Tie.

Once you place your bet the dealer deals two cards to each Player and two cards to the Banker. The value of each hand is totaled as follows:

  • Aces – 1 point
  • Face Cards – 10 points
  • Other Cards – Face Value

The first number in the total is dropped to determine the score. For example, King-Jack is scored as zero and 5-9 is scored as 4. There is a possibility that the Player, the Banker, or both may get another card. However this decision isn’t up to the player. There are drawing rules in Baccarat that determine who gets another card and who doesn’t.

Since the drawing rules are automatic, there’s no need to discuss them here. The dealer will automatically deal out a third card when the drawing rules deem it necessary.

What you do, however, want to be aware of is the final score. Nine is the highest possible score in Baccarat. Whoever has the highest score (The Player or the Banker) wins the hand. Remember that just because you are the one playing Baccarat doesn’t mean you have to bet on the Player. You’re free to bet on the banker as well.

The payouts for Baccarat Rules can vary somewhat from casino to casino. Typically, however, a winning bet on the Player pays even money and a winning bet on the Banker pays even money minus a 5% commission. Some casinos charge less than 5% and I’ve seen online casinos charge as little as 2.5%. If you can find a game with a low Banker commission, sit down and play. The commission is the house’s edge when it comes to Banker bets and the lower the commission, the better your chances are of going on a streak and bucking the short-term odds.

Payouts on Tie bets also vary. Most casinos pay 8-to-1 on a tie bet and some pay 9-to-1. Either way this bet give the player terrible odds. The casino’s edge on a table that pays 8-to-1 is 14.36%. Never bet on a tie.

Baccarat can be a fun game. The casino’s edge is small enough that you can play for a long time with a reasonable amount of money. In addition, the house’s edge is small enough that there’s a decent chance you could go on a streak and come out a winner. But like any game, you need to know the rules before you play.

This guide may have been basic only teaching you the basic Baccarat Rules, but it gives you all you need to know about playing the fun and easy game of Baccarat.
